Keyword difficulty (KD) is a score, usually 0-100, that estimates how hard it would be to rank on the first page of Google for a given search term. A higher number means stronger competition and more effort required.
The score is typically based on how authoritative the pages currently ranking are — their backlink profiles, domain strength, and content quality. A broad term like "insurance" has an enormous difficulty score because massive, established brands dominate it. A specific term like "flood insurance for coastal homes in Maine" is far more attainable.
